One of the reasons that I have enjoyed wilding so much with Vincent is the peace and quiet that results largely from not being among people and traffic but Vincent has also been guilty of generating his own noise. No, I don’t mean the on board generator, we would not be so crass or so ignorant as to fire up the generator in peaceful surroundings. No, I am afraid that the battery charger/transformer combination has resulted in some sleepless nights when on hook-up. A loud and unpleasant buzz has been very disruptive,
We did work out that the noise was louder when we were not actually drawing power, so one way to quiet things down was to plug in our small electric heater and this worked well on a cold night but the winter has been a warm one and many nights we have not needed or wanted any heating.
I have not been able to follow the complexities (so forgive me if any of this appears to be addled) but it seemed that the battery charger was either faulty or possibly just rubbish at its job. As the vendor had kindly fitted a new pair of leisure batteries for us due to the old ones being trashed, Mr Snail was concerned that the buzzing was a symptom and that the charger itself might be the cause and would now be ruining the new batteries. It was also charging only the leisure batteries and not the engine one, resulting in a major reluctance to start one morning.
Mr Snail purchased a gizmo that would enable the engine battery to join in the party and he fitted that before we went off for the holiday season. He discovered however that he lacked the right screwdriver bits to enable the fitting of the new charger that he had also bought. A set of bits arrived with us yesterday and the new charger was fitted, The change in noise levels is quite remarkable. Peace at last.
Things are not completely silent and in the quiet of the night we realised that there remains a low hum – this we think from the actual transformer. The nasty, loud and unpleasantly pitched buzzing is gone. Hurrah!
