Having driven over 800 Km in three days, we truly had a head start on the journey back to base. Coming to Tordesillas was absolutely the best thing that we could have done. We secured a large shady pitch, with grass, and all services. With the awning out too, we have been surviving the heatwave quite well. Nothing to do but listen to the Golden Orioles sing. And I mean nothing the site isn’t opening the pool until June 1st.

I have been doing a lot of reading.

So pleasantly shaded that we are not going to move off the pitch

We ate at the restaurant on Day 1, of course. It has to be done. TripAdvisor doesn’t give it the no 1 in town rating for nothing. Consequently, I ate far to much for such a hot day, spending the rest of the day feeling quite uncomfortable, and in contemplating buying some wine. Too hot to walk up to Bodegas Muelas, but the campsite shop has good wine (including Muedra). I feel as though we should at least buy the wine with the snail on the label.

It’s too hot for drinking wine.

We sat outside until quite late, waiting for the temperature to drop, listening to the Douro rushing over the weir, watching the bats come out at dusk, and then hearing the Scops owl peeping away. Just lovely. No mozzies about either – always a bonus.

Whilst we were chilling, we ended up booking a table for Friday at El Fogon de Jesuson. It was a crazy idea. They had only Dinner available, so we would not be seated until 21:15. It’s a 45 minute walk, with the temperature on the outward leg set to be over 30 degrees, and still in the high Twenties on the return.

Anyway, here it is, Friday today, and we are still here!

We considered the weather conditions, looked at where we were heading, and decided that our plan of inaction should be to do two extra nights here. And here we are, dinner table cancelled. Frankly, it is too hot to eat, we have scarcely touched a morsel since that ill-advised meal on Tuesday.

To avoid rescheduling the CT, we have cut out one stop (one that offers no shade) and will now spend only one night at Zarautz, instead of two. We will still do two nights in Burgos, but El Fogon doesn’t open on Sundays or Mondays. Better luck next time… though it’s probably all for the best.
